PROGRAMME NOTE
In All Directions is an arrangement and expansion of a set of piano pieces intended for younger players. Each of the five pieces obsessively focuses on a limited set of materials.
I. Lattice (Up/Down)
A web of ascending and descending scales and interval cycles: fifths, fourths, major and minor thirds, major seconds, and the octatonic scale.
II. Earth and Stars (Left/Right)
Multiple layers in the extreme low and high registers slowly move through a twelve-tone row (and its inversion) at di!erent speeds.
III. Labyrinth (Backwards/Forwards)
A maze of repeats and steady rhythmic alternations.
IV. Anchor (Still)
A cluster of ten notes is incessantly hammered out and strategically filtered away to reveal melodies and harmonies.
V. Epilogue (Entropy)
Fragments of the preceding pieces are played in a scrambled form, and gradually disintegrate.
